Why calibrate a breathalyzer?

Because its sensor, "the heart of a breathalyzer'', wears out. Frequent use of the breathalyzer naturally leads to lowering sensor's performance. If this happens, the results of the measurement will be incorrect. Breathalyzer calibration is conducted to adjust the device for obtaining the most accurate outcome, and as a result - a sense of confidence that you are sober and can e.g. drive a car.

How often you should calibrate a breathalyzer?

The calibration frequency depends on:

  1. type of a sensor

  2. the frequency of use (number of tests performed)

  3. storage conditions

Remember two things:
  1. With a few exceptions of some professional breathalyzers all require calibration.

  2. Try not to keep a breathalyzer for a long time together with materials containing alcohol (e.g. avoid holding it in a mini-bar).

Calibration only in the service!

Breathalyzer calibration is a matter for the professional services. You can't do it at home! Calibration must be carried out in laboratory conditions, because it is necessary to maintain the appropriate environment: temperature, humidity, air flow forces. For calibration appropriate simulators are used, so you can give the device a sample of air iwth ideally measured concentration of alcohol. In addition, the calibration must be conducted by trained service personnel.
